HENDERSON-Mamie Land Finch, age 100, a former resident of 207 Perry Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 12, 2012, in a local nursing home.Born on December 1, 1911 in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late George Rawlins Land and Anna Overton Land.Mrs. Finch was a 1927 graduate of Wilton High School and later from the Watts School of Nursing in Durham.She was a Register Nurse and was retired from Maria Parham Hospital, a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Christine Jenkins Sunday School Class, and the United Methodist Women.She was a charter member of the Vance County Historical Society and was a Red Cross Volunteer. Mamie was an avid bridge player, and particularly enjoyed her Sunday evening bridge with her son, Benny, Harry Bryan and his mother, Nellie Hearne.She enjoyed her travels throughout the United States and Europe.Her nursing skills and compassion for others continued throughout her retirement as she cared for family and friends. She worked closely with her good friend and nurse, Wynona Shuman, in bringing lifeline to Vance County.One of her greatest pleasures was the annual Land Family reunion.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00 AM in the J. M. White Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Doug Addington.Burial will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by one son, Melvin Benjamin Benny Finch, Jr. and wife, Jean Tarkenton Finch of Henderson; one granddaughter, Beth Finch Denny and husband, Jeff; and a number of nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Benjamin Finch, Sr.; three sisters, Eva Land Eakes, Eula Land Dixon and Lela Land Mayes; and two brothers, Clifton Land and Vernon Land.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7:00 until 8:30 pm at J. M. White Funeral Home.At other times they will be at the home of Benny and Jean Finch at 150 Crestwood Road.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Phillip C. Finch, Daniel F. Finch, F. O. Finch, II, J. Harry Bryan, James C. Land, Robert E. Land, and Sheldon R. Land.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 114 Church Street, Henderson, NC 27536.
The family would like to thank the Staff Of Senior Citizens Nursing Home and espcecially Helen Parham, who was her caregiver at home and later at Senior Citizens.
