HENDERSON- Margaret Buchanan Holton, age 90, a resident of 214 Crestwood Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019, at Wake Med North Hospital in Raleigh.
She was a native of Mitchell County and was the daughter of the late Harmon and Ruthie Buchanan. She was married to Elbert Ward "Whitey" Holton for 54 years prior to his death in 2004.
Mrs. Holton was a retired nurse practitioner with the Granville-Vance Health Department in Henderson and worked as a registered nurse at Maria Parham Hospital in Henderson and previously at hospitals in Statesville and Raleigh. She was a graduate of Brevard College in Brevard, N.C., and Davis Nursing School in Statesville, N.C. She also furthered her education in nursing at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
Mrs. Holton was a member of the Chancel Choir at First United Methodist Church in Henderson for 55 years and an active member of the church, serving as a leader of the United Methodist Women, playing piano for her Sunday School class, the Fellowship Class, and taking an active role in the church’s Visitation Tape Ministry visitation program, among other activities.
She also loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Most recently, Mrs. Holton had been a resident of the Clare Bridge unit of the Brookdale Wake Forest assisted living facility and was assisted by Heartland Hospice in Wake County.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 4 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bobby Fletcher and the Rev. George D. Speake. Burial will be Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 1 p.m. in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by two daughters, Cynthia H. Edwards and husband, James D. Edwards of Henderson, and Pamela H. Burns and husband, Clay D. Burns of San Jose, California; five grandchildren, Laurie E. Muirhead and husband, Adam Murihead of Knightdale, Lucie E. Strickland and husband, Don Strickland of Durham, Christina G. Burns of Raytown, Missouri, Chandler H. Burns of San Jose, California, and Dennis W. Burns of Raleigh, N.C.; two great-grandchildren, Aiden C. Burns of Raytown, Mo., and Madison E. Muirhead of Knightdale; and one brother, Morris Buchanan of Suffolk, Virginia, and his wife, Vera Buchanan.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall of First United Methodist Church. At other times they will be at the home of Cindy and James Edwards at 224 Willowood Drive.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Church, Tommy Farmer, Dean Thornton, Lennie Swanson, John Headman, John Hyson, Donald Paynter and Wayne Gray.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 114 Church St., Henderson, N.C. 27536.
