HENDERSONMaria Southerland Legg Wortham, 92, beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother died Monday, May 1, 2017 in Wilmington, NC.
Born on Easter Sunday, April 12, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Milton Franklin Legg and Maria Watkins Legg. She was the great granddaughter of Maria Parham for whom the Maria Parham Medical Center is named.
Mrs. Wortham graduated from Henderson High School in 1942, where she was a drum majorette in the Henderson High School Band. She received an Associate of Arts Degree from St. Marys Jr. College in 1944, where she was the Chief Marshal, a member of the singing group, The Sextet, and a member of the honorary society of the Circle. She received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Kentucky in 1946. She was a member of the Tri Delta sorority. She later received a teaching certificate from Atlantic Christian College in Wilson in 1976.
She worked at the Wilson County Child Development Center from 1972 to 1974. She then worked in the Wilson County Public School system as a teacher of Special Needs children for ten years. It was her life time dream to work with Special Needs children. She also volunteered as a tutor for Vance County Public Schools.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Henderson, where she sang in the Adult Choir, the Colonial Dames, the Henderson Garden Club, the Tuesday Club, and the ALMA Club. She enjoyed her family, friends, reading, traveling, nature, Bridge, and walking.
Mrs. Wortham moved from Henderson to Wilson, NC with her late husband, Turner Jones Wortham, and their two children. She lived in Wilson from 1968 to 1988. In 1988 she moved back to Henderson to be close to her brother, the late Milton Franklin Legg, Jr. and his wife, Mary Fox Legg, her mother-in-law, the late Louise Nisser Jones Shaw, her uncle, the late Andrew Jackson Watkins and his wife, the late Nora Browning Watkins, and her uncle, the late Straughan Henley Watkins and his wife, the late Amie Cheatham Watkins.
She is preceded in death by her husband, the late Turner Jones Wortham, her brother, the late Milton Franklin Legg, Jr., and her twin sister, the late Katherine Legg Carr. She is survived by her son, Turner Jones Wortham, Jr. and his wife, Della Thomas Wortham, of Wilmington, NC, and her daughter, Emma Louise Wortham of Henderson, NC, and three grandchildren: Pryce Turner Wortham and his wife, Kate, Clara Southerland Wortham Robinson, and her husband, Stuart, and Thomas Jones "T.J." Wortham, and one great granddaughter, Emma Pierce Robinson and one great grandson, Stuart Wesley Robinson II.
A private graveside service will be held Monday at Elmwood Cemetery.A memorial service will follow at the First Baptist Church of Henderson at 11:30 AM on Monday conducted by Dr. Ron Cava. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Music Fund, PO Box 75, Henderson, NC 27536.
