WILMINGTON- Marion Cutts “Poogie” Boyd, 70, of Wilmington died Sunday, August 3, 2025 at home. Born May 11, 1955 Poogie was the son of the late Fred Clifton “FC” Boyd and Mary Frances Cutts Boyd. He grew up in Stovall. He was active and interested in the progress of the town, serving as commissioner with a special interest in the building of the town park. He was a member of Stovall Baptist Church. After graduating from JF Webb High School in 1973 he went into business with his father at Williams-Breedlove Department Store in Oxford. In 1982 he opened his own Boyd’s Mini Mart, also known as “Poogie’s”. He retired in 2002 to look after his mother. Poogie enjoyed people. (This is an understatement!) He also enjoyed seeing and helping his friends succeed in life. He was extremely thoughtful and generous. You could not leave his house without being loaded up with his home-cooked food, or fresh vegetables. In 1992 he bought a second home in Wrightsville Beach and made a whole new group of friends there. He bought several boats and fished, cruised, entertained, drove one boat over the rock jetty at Masonboro Inlet, and generally had a lot of fun. Lots of Oxford friends visited too. He made even more friends by parking cars in his driveway on crowded beach weekends, not charging too much, and displeasing the civil authority. There were more than a few Bud Lights consumed on the front porch of East Henderson Street. Poogie is survived by his Cutts and Boyd cousins, and their families, and many, many friends in Stovall, Oxford, and the Wrightsville Beach area. He was predeceased by his beloved companion and dog “Coconut”. They were very close. We give special thanks for the care he’s received this year from Novant hospital and staff, and from some angels near his end: the Lower Cape Fear Life Care nurses and care team, and our special “girls” Karen, Phyllis, Jane, Fontella, Misha, Kim, Doretha, and Angela. A memorial service was held at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market Street, Wilmington, on Saturday, August 9. A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. in the Stovall Memorial Cemetery by Rev. Wayne Clark. Poogie specified casual dress. Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Life Care,1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington; or Zimmer Cancer Center, 2131 S 17th St, Wilmington.
