Mary Ann Powell Everett, 76, of Boynton Beach, Florida, succumbed to cancer after a courageous three year battle on October 27, 2015, at her home in Wilmington, North Carolina surrounded by members of her loving family.Mary Ann was born April 7, 1939 in Oxford, North Carolina to the late Thomas Grey Powell and Nell Tunstall Powell.
She was a graduate of Oxford High School in 1957, and Saint Marys Junior College in Raleigh, NC in 1959.She was a 1961 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.While in high school she hosted a Saturday call-in radio show on Station WOXF, was chief cheerleader, a member of the Debate Club, President of the Mixed Chorus, played clarinet in the school band and studied piano.
Mary Ann was married to George Wall Holden, Jr. in 1961.After first living in Burlington the couple moved to Henderson, NC in 1963.George passed away in 1995 after a lengthy illness. Surviving are the couples three children George Wall Holden III (Beth) and Thomas Powell Holden (Cecilia) of Raleigh andJenny Holden Gomatos Eckmeder (Bruce) of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Chandler, Blake, Caroline and Tyler Holden, Ceci and Powell Holden, George and James Gomatos, Brett and Jenna Eckmeder; brother Robert Thomas Powell (Lydia) of Oxford, and sister Laura Leslie Crudup (John Boddie) of Wilson, NC. Also surviving are her husband of 18 years, Houston Spencer Everett, Jr and step-daughter Marcy Everett Voelkel (Peter) of Raleigh and 6 step-grandchildren.Step-son Wesley Houston Spencer Everett (Lisa) of Chapel Hill and Murrells Inlet, SC died in 2012.
Mary Ann was an active community member who bloomed wherever she was planted. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the NC Museum of History, a member of the Selection Committee for the Morehead Scholarship program at UNC-CH, a volunteer for the Duke Medical Center Cancer Support Program and a member of the UNC-Wilmington Board of Visitors.She was instrumental in founding Vance Academy in Henderson and an active member of the Henderson Garden Club and a member of the Alumni Board of Chi Omega Sorority. She became a tour director in 1993 after attending school in California to learn the business, and led tours along the East Coast for Saga Holidays of England and music tours to Branson, Missouri.
After living in Chapel Hill, the Everetts moved to the Landfall Community in Wilmington in 1998 and later established residence in Florida in 2005.As members of the Quail Ridge Community and Country Club in Boynton Beach and the Ocean Club of Florida, Mary Ann enjoyed duplicate bridge, golf with her husband and many friends, and singing with Spencer as members of the Quail Ridge Chorus. Benefiting from Mary Anns tour director experience the couple traveled widely. Mary Ann took great pleasure in exposing her children, grandchildren and nephews to the arts, and different cultures through world travel.
The family expresses great appreciation to the doctors, nurses and care givers in Florida, Chapel Hill and Wilmington for their expertise and gentle kindness throughout Mary Anns three-year journey.
A memorial service officiated by Rev. Victoria Jamieson-Drake, will be held at The Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill on Friday, November 6 at 2:00PM.Reception to follow at the church.
