CANDLER, NC - Mary Elisabet Jensen Mabe died peacefully Sunday, December 15, 2013, at the home of her daughter, Patricia Mabe-Parker, in Candler, NC.She was 93.
Mary was born May 27, 1920 in Tama County, Iowa to Ane Kirstine Andersen and Gustav V. Jensen, the youngest of four children.She grew up in High Point and graduated from Central High School. In 1942, she married John Ivan Mabe of Guilford County.He was an executive with Roses Stores, Inc., and she and John lived in Williamsburg, New Bern, Bristol, Norfolk and Charlotte before moving to Henderson, NC in 1961. She moved to Asheville in 2006 to be near family.
Widowed in 1967, Mary dedicated herself to rearing her four children and giving back to her community.She became branch coordinator of the American Red Cross in Vance County, a position she held for more than 20 years.She was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Henderson, where she taught Sunday school, worked with Area Churches Together in Service (ACTS), served on the administrative board, was a circle member, and for many years was costume mistress of the living nativity.
Mary was a Girl Scout leader, a member of the Sorosis Club, and an avid bridge player. She enjoyed going to the beach and in 1996 traveled to visit relatives in her parents native Denmark. Her house in the Grove on South William Street in Henderson was a center of love and untold special projects involving her four children, eight grandchildren, extended family and friends over the years.
Mary had a sense of grace, a bright wit, and endless compassion for everyone from all walks of life.She was always thinking of others before herself, and wanted to assure others comfort over hers until the very end.
Mary is survived by her children:Barbara Macon of Cullowhee, Betty Pearson and husband Curtis of Atlantic Beach, John Ivan Mabe, Jr. and wife Walker of Raleigh, and Patricia Mabe-Parker of Candler; grandchildren:Lisa Macon Harrison (Mrs. Michael) of Wake Forest, Ben Macon and wife Chelley of West Point, NY, Harry Pearson of Wilmington, Laura Pearson of Charlotte, Jensen Mabe of Raleigh, Kate Temple-Mabe (Mrs. Andrew) of London, UK, Charlotte Mabe of New York City, and Hannah Parker Redmon (Mrs. Adam) of Waynesville; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, December 19 at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.The family will receive visitors in the church parlor beginning at 12:30 pm.
Pallbearers are David Michael Harrison, Jr., Bennett Alston Macon, III, Harry Stern Pearson, Adam Douglas Redmon, Jesus Ortiz, and Henry A. Ross, Jr.
