HENDERSON- Mary Fox Clarke Legg was born to Thelma Kirk Clarke and John Hord Clarke on December 11, 1924 in Maysville, KY.Known affectionately as Foxie, she died peacefully at home with her family by her side on August 15, 2016.She was married to Milton Franklin Legg, Jr. for 51 years.In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Frank, sister Minkie Clarke Denham, brother John H. Clarke, Jr. and sister-in-law, Katherine Legg Carr.
Foxie attended St. Marys Jr. College in Raleigh and graduated from the University of Kentucky, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.It was while she was at St. Marys that she met her future husband, Frank, who was the brother of her roommate, Maria Legg.After they married and moved to Henderson, Foxie became active in her community, becoming a member of the First Methodist Church, where she was a member and president of the WSCS.She was also a member of the choir, and a Circle member.She was a member of the Alma Club, the Tuesday Club, Sip and Dip Bridge Club, Henderson Garden Club and Maria Parham Auxiliary.She was a member of the NC Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Sturday, August 20th at Elmwood Cemetery in Henderson.
Foxie is survived by her daughter, Hayden Legg Hill and husband Rhode of Atlanta, GA, daughter Mary Legg Moore and husband Mike of Raleigh, son Milton F. Legg, III, Sturdy of Atlantic Beach, NC and son John D. Legg and wife Neill of Fayetteville, NC.Her grandchildren include William Roderick Hill, Jr., and wife Brittany, John Stockton Hill and wife Mims, Caroline Kelly Legg, John Morehead Legg, Andrew McNeill Legg, Mary Katherine Molly Moore and Michael Franklin Moore; her great grandchildren, Lauren Payne Hill, William Roderick Hill, III and Elizabeth Dougherty Hill.Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Maria Legg Wortham and many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the home.
The Legg family is grateful to her loving and dedicated caregivers, Doug Wortham, Ruth Nelson, Emma V. Baskerville, Lucille Marrow, Martha Ann Pugh, Jossie Macklin, Daniel Null and Christopher Rigg and also to Clarence White.
