KITTRELL-Mary Lou Stone Wells, 90, formerly a long-time resident of Raleigh Road, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 6, 2026 in Rolesville, NC. Born in Vance County on July 17, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Julian Gill Stone and Everlene Hicks Stone and was the widow of Gerald Hartwell Wells.
She was a graduate of Zeb Vance High School Class of 1953 and was a graduate of East Carolina University. She married the love of her life, Gerald H. Wells in May 1956. The couple moved to Washington D.C. where Mary Lou worked in the offices of Senator George Bender of Ohio and John Sherman Cooper of Kentucky. In 1960 they moved back to Kittrell where the couple owned and operated Wells Electric Service for 47 years.
She was a lifelong member and great supporter of Union Chapel Church of Kittrell, serving on many committees including the Parsonage Committee, Pastor Parish Relations Committee, and Children’s Sunday School.
Mary Lou was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, entertaining her friends, particularly members of her long time couples bridge club, and traveling.
She is survived by two daughters, Angela W. Twisdale (Perry) of Rolesville and Wendy W. Askew (Matt) of Kittrell; three grandchildren, Will Bumgarner (Destinie), Kate Howard (Wesley) and Josh Bumgarner; and two great grandchildren, Scarlett Bumgarner (10) and Wells Bumgarner (4).
Funeral services will be held Thursday April 9, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Union Chapel Church 3635 Raleigh Rd Kittrell, NC 27544 by Pastor Perry Twisdale. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service on Thursday April 9, 2026 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM.
Serving as pallbearers will be, Will Bumgarner, Josh Bumgarner, Matt Askew, Wesley Howard, Billy T. Staton and Gene Ayscue.
