HENDERSON-Morris Rowland Abbott, Sr., age 82, a resident of 266 Rock Mill Road, died Saturday, April 30, 2016, at his home.Born in Vance County on August 7, 1933, he was the son of the late Erastus McCray Abbott and Lucy West Abbott.Morris was a retired bridge maintenance supervisor for the N. C. DOT.
He was a founding member of Unity Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the Deacons.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11 am at Unity Baptist Church by the Rev. Calvin Hedgepeth.A private burial will be held at Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Helen Edwards Abbott of the home; two sons, Morris Rowland "Sam" Abbott, Jr. and wife Kathy and Marcus Abbott of Henderson; one daughter, Olivia A. Gresham and husband, Steve of Henderson; four grandchildren, Jason Abbott, Joanna Nies, Christian Coghill, and Camden Gresham; two great grandchildren, John Abbott and Karly Nies; three brothers, Hubert Abbott of Raleigh, Thurston Abbott and Gilbert Abbott of Henderson; three sisters, Dorothy Hutto of Columbia, SC, Patricia Ellington and Frances Abbott of Henderson.He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
The family will receive friends Tuesday following the service at Unity Baptist Church.
At other times they will be at the home.
