HENDERSON-Nancy Bobbitt Ormond, age 69, a resident of 2550 Flemingtown Road, died Sunday, July 12, 2015, at her home.Born on February 27, 1946 in Norfolk, Virginia, she was the daughter of Joyce Meekins Bobbitt of Henderson and the late Malcom J. Bobbitt.She received her Master Degree from East Carolina University and was retired from the Vance County School system after 26 years, having taught at Middleburg School, E.O. Young, and Eaton Johnson.
Nancy was a member of Middleburg Baptist Church and a former member of New Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
She was also very active with The Arc for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and through her advocacy, Nancy changed lives. Her commitment to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities knew no bounds.
In the 1990s Nancy began her lengthy tenure as President of The Arc of Vance County. She collaborated with other agencies in the community: she worked with the schools, vocational agencies, mental health authorities, and housing groups. Nancy supported them, and when needed, pushed them to do things differently so that people with disabilities had new opportunities to participate and be included.
Nancy was a staunch advocate. She helped families in the community with whatever was needed; access to services, inclusion in schools, recreational activities, and job skills. She was knowledgeable of the laws and passionate about her cause which was helping people with disabilities lead full rich lives in the community.
Nancy did not confine her advocacy to Vance County. She served on The Arc of North Carolina Board of Directors for over ten years. She was the North Central Regional Vice president for many of those years. She also served on and chaired numerous committee of the Board including; Operations, Program Services, Adult Issues, and Chapter Services.Nancys dedication and commitment to The Arc at the local and state level improved the lives of so many people with disabilities and their families.
In addition to her service with The ARC, Nancy served locally on the Five County Mental Health Advisory Board from February 2004 till December 2011 and on the board for the Henderson-Vance Recreation Department.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Middleburg Baptist Church by the Rev. James Parker and Rev. Tim Burgess. Burial will follow in the Middleburg Cemetery.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Heather Ormond Perry and boyfriend, Robert T. Abbott, and Leigh Anne Ormond all of Norlina; two grandchildren, Donald R. Perry, Jr. and wife, Suzanne, and Allison Renee Perry; one great grandchild, Baylee Renee Perry; two sisters, Mollie B. Scerbo and Joyce B. Carpunky of Henderson; one brother, Malcom J. Bobbitt, Jr. of Henderson; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Tuesday night from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at J.M. White Funeral Home.At other times they will be at her home at 2550 Flemingtown Road.
Serving as active pall bearers will be C.T. Robertson, Justis Bobbitt, Jordan Bobbitt, Doyle Carpunky, Lit Carpunky and Don Perry.
