Nathan Sachs
(1932 - 2014)
Nathan Sachs, 82, of Henderson, NC died after an extended illness on December 14, 2014 in his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Baltimore MD, on October 11, 1932, he was the oldest of three sons of Elsie Briskman and Joseph Sachs. On January 16, 1955, he married his junior high school sweetheart, Joan Hartz Sachs to whom he remained devoted for nearly 60 years. They moved to Henderson in 1962 where Nathan operated Henderson Garment Company until 1972. He started Timberline Woodcrafters in 1973 and built that business from a small operation in his basement to a successful multifaceted manufacturing and packaging concern from which he retired in 2002. Nathan served his country during the Korean War as a U.S. Marine where he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was honorably discharged after 5 years of service and was active in the Marine Corps Auxiliary. An avid gardener, he always planted more than his family could eat each summer and enjoyed sharing vegetables with his friends, neighbors and employees. He was also a master craftsman with a basement full of tools that he used to build, repair and design furniture, outdoor structures or anything else he felt inspired to create. Nathan was a loving husband, proud father and grandfather and a beloved brother and uncle. In addition to his wife Joan, he is survived by his daughter Susan and her partner Susan Sutton of Durham, his son Louis and his wife Madelaine of Henderson and his grandson Joseph of Madison, VA. He is also survived by his brothers Herbert and his wife Anne of Annapolis, MD and Robert and his wife Mickey of Bel Air, MD as well as 3 nephews and 5 nieces and 10 grand nieces and nephews. A private family service was held at Raleigh Hebrew Cemetery. A memorial service will be held on January 18, 2015 at 2 pm at J.M White Funeral Home in Henderson. Nathan will be missed terribly by his family and friends and remembered for his tender heart and generous spirit. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Dr. Adrian Ogle, Dr. William Dennis, Maxim Healthcare Services and Community Home Care and Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donation can be made to H. Leslie Perry Memorial Library in Henderson, the Wounded Warrior Project.org or a charity of the donors choosing.
