Nell Eugenia Burnette Averette, 95, a former resident of 7509 Hicksboro Road, died Sunday, December 03, 2017, in a local nursing home.
Born on July 10, 1922 in Granville County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie B. Burnette and Claudia Smith Burnette, and was the widow of Claude Swanson Averette to whom she was married to for 56 years.
A 1939 graduate of Oxford High School, Nell was employed at Granville Manufacturing Company until it closed.Later, she worked as cashier at Roses in Oxford and Henderson until she retired at age 88.
As a young girl, Nell joined Salem United Methodist Church and after marriage joined Island Creek Baptist Church.She was a former member of the Shanks OBrien Sunday School Class, the WMU, a teacher of the beginner Sunday School Class and Vacation Bible School.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the chapel of J. M. White Funeral Home by the Rev. J. Marshall Neathery.Entombment will follow in Sunset Gardens.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Jean H. Averette of Oxford; two grandchildren, Michael Curtis Averette, Jr. and wife, Angie Hedgepeth Averette of Henderson and Benjamin James Averette and wife Anna Floyd Averette of Creedmoor; three great grandsons, James Alexander Averette, John Madison Averette and Charles Bernard Averette; a special niece Ann Rice and husband Nathan of Oxford; and other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Curtis Averette, Sr., two brothers Allie Burnette and Charles Burnette; one sister, Nettie B. Jordan; and three nephews, William, Eugene, and Earl Burnette.
The family will receive friends at the home of Jean Averette, 7534 Hicksboro Road, Oxford.
Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Norwood, Jimmy Hobgood, Floyd Hart, Nathan Rice, Larry Satterwhite, and Donnie Hogge.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Island Creek Baptist Church, 950 Stagecoach Road, Henderson, NC27537.
