She was a graduate of Zeb Vance High School as valedictorian: she received her
bachelor's degree from Greensboro College with a major in English and a minor in
religious education, graduating Magna Cum Laude and serving as editor-in-chief on
their yearbook staff; and she received her Master of Arts in English and a minor in
secondary education from Duke University. She also studied English and journalism
at the University of Tennessee on a fellowship granted by the Wall Street Journal.
Miss Stanton continued her love of learning participating in the Governor's School
Teacher Training Institute in Winston Salem, a follow-up institute at UNC Charlotte,
and various professional development courses from East Carolina University and
correspondence courses at the University of Chicago.
A dedicated high school English teacher for over 40 years, Miss Stanton began her
career in Hoke County High School in Raeford and after two years taught at Charles
L. Coon High School in Wilson. Some of her duties at those schools were sponsor of
the dramatics club, sponsor of the booster club and sponsor of the junior class. She
finally moved home to Henderson High School where she was the advisor for the
school newspaper, The Bulldog. Once the high school moved to Vance Senior High,
she became one of the sponsors for the National Honor Society and spent some time
advising, The Viking. One of her hobbies was traveling; therefore, she planned school
trips to New York and England. She also helped with numerous school productions.
In 1979, Miss Stanton received the Teacher of the Year Award.
She was also a member and involved in many professional organizations: North
Carolina Association of Educators- served as secretary for Vance County, NC
Teachers of English Association, past president of the English teachers in the east
central district of NCAE, Delta Kappa Gamma an international honor society for
women educators- appointed as professional affairs chairman and served as vice
president. When she wasn't spending her summers at these meetings or professional
development, she performed or worked behind the scenes in many of the Henderson
Rec Players performances, including Mame, Carousel, Fiddler On The Roof, The
Sound of Music, just to name a few.
She considered some of her highest honors, along with Teacher of the Year to be
inducted into the International Thespian Society and selected as secretary of the NC
Symphony Orchestra. Her love of music continued as a choir member at her church,
since birth, Union Chapel United Methodist Church in Kittrell. Miss Stanton also
served her church in various ways as well.
Funeral services will be held Saturday October 19, 2019 at 11am at Union Chapel
United Methodist Church by the Rev. Shane Benjamin. Burial will follow in the
church cemetery. The family has asked for friends and family to join them for a
reception immediately following in the church fellowship hall.
A beloved aunt, she is survived by one sister, Carolyn S. Parham of the home; Ms.
Parham's children, Donna Diemer of Henderson; Bobby Parham, Jr. of Henderson:
Beverly Colmant of Gainesville, FL; Angela Hartwell of Wellington, FL; a sister-in-
law, Frances Stanton of Kittrell; her children, Danny Stanton of Henderson and Billy
Stanton of Kittrell; another sister-in-law, Gayle Stanton of Henderson; her children,
Ellen Stanton Griswold of Jefferson, GA and David Stanton of Franklinton; a brother-
in-law, George Overton of Fayetteville and his son Keith Overton of Orlando, FL; a
first cousin, Willie Stanton; 11 great nieces and nephews, and 6 great great nieces and
nephews.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice S. Overton
and two brothers, B
