Richard Lee Mathews, age 90, a resident of Senior Citizens Nursing Home, and a former resident of Townsville and Rowland Street, died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Maria Parham Medical Center. Born on March 4, 1923 in Vance County, he was the son of the late George W. Mathews and Catherine Riggan Mathews.Richard was the oldest living member of Tabernacle United Methodist Church where he formerly served as a Lay Leader and member of the choir.He also served in prison ministry for the Gideons.He was a retired Major of the Civil Air Patrol where he served for twenty-seven years.He retired from the Vance County Rescue Squad of which he was a former Chairman, and was one of the first to train EMT personnel. He was a former member of the Henderson Exchange Club and the former Kiwanis Golden K Club of which he served as Secretary.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 4:00 PM at Tabernacle United Methodist Church by the Rev. Kathryn Johnson and the Rev. Henry Lovelace.Burial followed in the church cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Holtzman Mathews of Senior Citizens Nursing Home; one sister, Doris M. Reavis of Warrenton; and many nieces and nephews. In additon to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, John Mathews, George Mathews, William Mathews, James Hunter Mathews, Thomas Mathews, Frank Mathews, and Sterling Mathews.
The family will receive friends Monday from 3:00 until 4:00 PM at Tabernacle United Methodist Church.
Serving as active pall bearers will be Johnny Riggan, Jerry Holtzman, Charles Holtzman, Kyle Holtzman, F. T. Wrenn, and Justin Holtzman.Serving as honorary pall bearers will be members of the Vance County Rescue Squad.
