HENDERSON-Richard Gary Smith, age 90, a resident of 7070 NC 39 Hwy. South, died Saturday, October 15, 2016, at his home.Born in Vance County on May 31, 1926, he was the son of the late Forrest W. Smith and Daisy Hoyle Smith, and was the widower of Rebecca Dickerson Smith.He was a Veteran of the United States Navy, a retired tobacco farmer, and a former member of New Bethel Baptist Church.
Graveside Military Services will be held Tuesday at 11 am at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by two daughters, Teresa S. Harris (Tony) of Henderson and Sandra Keith (Tommy) of Creedmoor; one son, Danny Smith (Karen) of Henderson; one sister, Rose Finch (John) of Wake Forest; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Gary Smith; three brothers, Forrest Smith, Jr., Allison Smith, and Harold Smith; and one sister, Mary Ann Boyd.
The family will receive friends following the service at Sunset Gardens.At other times they will be at his home at 7070 NC 39 Hwy. South.
