Robert Worth "Bob" Williams, Sr., 89, a former resident of 198 Vicksboro Road, died peacefully Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 9:20 pm in a local nursing home.Mr. Williams was surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Orange County on April 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Murde Eugene Williams and Annie Stinson Williams Bennett.
He was widower of Helen Lee "Pat" Williams and Annie Mae Rose Williams.
Mr. Williams was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II, and was a retired Maintenance Director at Maria Parham Medical Center.He was a member of City Road United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Mens Bible Class, and formerly served as President of the Methodist Men, Sunday School Superintendent, Trustee, Chairman of the Building Committee, Sunday School Teacher of the Henry A. Dennis Sunday School Class, teacher of the Intermediate Sunday School Class, and the choir.
Mr. Williamss love for children lead him to serve on the PTA in Durham and Vance County for over 30 years, serving as President, Vice President and numerous other committee positions. He was also a member of the Band Boosters, as well as numerous other committees throughout the Vance County School System. He also served as a volunteer for the Vance Co. Friends of Youth Program, was also on the Vance Co. Youth Advocacy Board, was awarded Oldest Vance Co. Employee numerous times, awarded the NC Governors Volunteer award, served as Hunter Safety Instructor for the N.C. Wildlife Assoc. for 14 years, on the Vance Co. Beautification Committee, served on the NC Republican Committee for numerous years. He also worked closely with Gov. James E. Holshouser, Jr. in the election to the 68th Governor of the State of NC. in 1973.
Mr. Williams served as a volunteer in the Boy Scouts OfAmerica (BSA) for more than 60 years as a active scout.He served on the Occoneechee Council of the Durham District and Great Northern District.His devotion to the BSA began as a Scout, then Assistant Scout Master leader, and Scout Master Leader.He served as Explorer Post leader, on the POW staff ten years, taught Den Chief Training six years, served on the Council Cub Training Team ten years, served on the Staff of Webelos Weekend Outdoor leader training, staff of Webelos weekend outdoor leader training, staff for Scout-O-Rama of Southern area for five years, served on the Council Camporees Committee, was a member of the Food for scouting Campaign, and member of the Cub Roundtable Committee.He was in the Commissioner College of Science Club Scout Council National Training Team.He was the recipient of the District Award of Merit, the Club Scout Wood Badge Award, The Silver Beaver Award which is the most prestigious and highest award given to a volunteer of the BSA, Scout Master Award, Den Leader Award, and Cub Master Award. The Philmont Scout Ranch is a large, rugged, mountainous ranch located near the town of Cirarron, New Mexico.The training Center is the primary location for BSAs national volunteer training program.Mr. Williams visited the Philmont Scout Ranch many times throughout his life to hike the rugged trails and admire the beautiful scenery.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at City Road United Methodist Church at 11 am by the Rev Heather Harding.
Burial with Military Honors will follow in Sunset Gardens.
He is survived by his four loving children of deceased wife, Helen L. "Pat" Williams of 34 years, daughter, Kimberly Williams Ellis (Robert), sons Tyrus M. "Ty" Williams, Bradley T. "Brad" Williams (Teresa), and R. Scott Williams all of Henderson. He is survived by his special grandchildren Courtney W. Kiger(David) of Kittrell, Morgan A. Williams, Ashley H. Williams, McKenzie L. Williams, and Samantha L. Williams all of Henderson; great granddaughters Alexis D. Kiger and Aubrey N. Kiger of Kittrell.He is also survived by children from a previous marriage, Richard E. "Rick" Williams (Keith) ofCreedmoor, Randall K. W
