Robert Gill "Chick" Young Jr., 84 a resident of 120 White Oak Drive passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Duke University Hospital. Born in Vance County on October 27, 1933 he was the son of the late Robert Gill Young and Helen Goodwyn Young. He graduated from Henderson High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Administration in 1956. He was a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity while at UNC, excelling in intramural sports. He joined the Naval Reserve in Pensacola Florida, and was commissioned an Ensign in 1957. After serving 4 years active duty in Argentia, Newfoundland and 26 years in the Naval Reserve in Norfolk, Virginia, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Joint Service Detachment 206. After release from active duty in 1960, he returned to Henderson to enter business with his dad. In 1965 he opened a Life and Health Insurance Agency and was active until his death. He was also active in community life as a member and President of the Henderson Jaycees, chairman of the Henderson Recreation Commission, Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, and was a Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Foundation. In 1979, Chick was elected Mayor of Henderson and served until his retirement in 2003. He served on the Board of Directors and many committees of The North Carolina League of Cities. Upon his retirement, he was presented The George Rose Watkins Jr., Citizen of the Year Award and was also presented The Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the Governor of North Carolina. Chick followed all University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill sports with a special love for Carolina basketball.He loved playing sports and games with his friends and family.Golf held a special place in his heart and he played at every opportunity, especially in his retirement.Chick held the course record of 61 at Henderson County Club before the course was redesigned.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at The Church of The Holy Innocents by the Rev. Donald A. Lowery.A reception will follow in the Great Hall of The Church of The Holy Innocents.At other times they will be at the home.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Knott Young, who was his high school sweetheart; two sons, Robert Gill Young, III and wife, Marion Allsbrook Young of Clayton; and Richard Cheatham Young of Henderson.Also surviving are three grandsons, Robert Gill Young, IV and wife, Misti Rae Young of Clayton; David Curtis Young and wife, Kristin Thorpe Young of Clayton, and Richard Cheatham Young,, Jr. of Lancaster, California; brother-in-law, Hal Wesley Knott and wife, Gwen of Greensboro; three great granddaughters, Stella Rae Young, Georgia Rayne Young, and Olivia Grace Young; and many dear nieces, nephews, and special friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Watkins Goodwyn Young and his wife, Marie Powell Young; his sister, Helen Young Pierce and her husband, Jean William Pierce.
