HENDERSON- It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Samuel Wilbur Brummitt, Sr., age 81, of Henderson on October 20, 2017. He was born in Henderson on December 13, 1935 to the late Mattie Adcock Brummitt and Harold B. Brummitt. Sam touched many lives and was a pillar of his community.
Sam received his B.S. in Textile Engineering from North Carolina State University where he was a member of the textile fraternity Delta Kappa Phi. Early in his career, he graduated from the UNC Young Executives Institute and worked at Burlington Industries. After 35 years of devoted service to Harriet & Henderson Yarns, Sam retired as the Vice President of Manufacturing. He also served as the President of the Southern Textile Association.
Sam was a lifetime member of First United Methodist Church where he sang tenor in the choir for over 60 years, and also performed with the Northeast Piedmont Chorale. He was a golf enthusiast, and enjoyed playing golf at the Kerr Lake Country Club and the Henderson Country Club. He also served as Coach of the Boys Golf Team at Kerr-Vance Academy. Sam enjoyed coaching his three boys in church and recreation league baseball and basketball.
A celebration to honor Sam’s lifewill be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2017at 3:00 PM at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. Joyce Odom and Joe Callahan.
Sam is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Jones Brummitt; children Samuel "Butch" Brummitt, Jr. (Kim), Dan Brummitt, Mark Brummitt (Susan), Cathy Ipock (Adam), Gaither Jones (Kelli), Hayden Jones (Megan); grandchildren Jamie Brummitt (Andrew Coates), Danielle Brummitt (Jonathan Abbott), Nick Ipock, Brittany Brummitt, Cameron Brummitt, Chris Ipock, Reese Jones, and Henley Jones. Sam is also survived by hisbrothers, Herchell Brummitt (Teddy) and Bobby Brummitt (Jackie); and the mother of his children, Margie H. Brummitt.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in deathby his brother, Jimmy Brummitt (Jeanette).
The family will receive friends on Monday from 10:00 AM till 6:00 PM at the home.
