HENDERSON-Samuel Barker Watkins, Jr., age 84, a resident of 325 Willowood Drive, died Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at Granville House in Oxford.Born on April 2, 1929 in Warren County, he was the son of the late Samuel Barker Watkins, Sr. and Agnes Harris Watkins Deady.He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and was a retired truck driver for the former Roses Stores, Inc., now Variety Wholesale where he worked for 52 years.He was a member of South Henderson Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a member of the Living & Faith Sunday School Class, and was a former member of the Henderson Shrine Club.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 am at Sunset Gardens by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Harris Watkins of the home and Granville House in Oxford; one daughter, Brenda W. Peoples and husband Allen of Rocky Mount; two sons, Samuel Barker Sammy Watkins, III and wife Michelle, and Ronald Harris Ronnie Watkins and wife Norie all of Henderson; one brother, Vance Foster Watkins of Raleigh; three sisters, Betty Jean W. Pegram of South Hill, VA, Ferbee W. Reavis and Ellen W. Chandler of Henderson; six grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.He was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor W. Robinson; and one brother, Robert Fleming Dick Watkins.
The family will receive friends at the home at 325 Willowood Drive.
