Shirley Johnson Taylor

March 1, 1942 — January 12, 2024

HENDERSON-Shirley Pegram Taylor, 81, of Weybossett Road, died Friday, January 12, 2024 at Duke University Hospital. Born March 1, 1942 in Vance County, she was the daughter of the late James Thomas Pegram and Annie May Parham Pegram. Shirley was the former co-owner and operator of the Sugar-N-Spice Preschool and was retired from The Church of The Holy Innocents Preschool. Caring for children was always one of her greatest passions and she cherished the opportunity to be a part of so many children’s lives. She was a lifelong member of North Henderson Baptist Church where she volunteered her time in numerous capacities. She considered it a blessing to be able to serve the church and community, and showed her love of Christ by helping countless people over the years. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM at North Henderson Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Nutt. Those attending are encouraged to wear bright colors, hats, etc. in keeping with Shirley’s style and flare. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Albert “Al” Leon Taylor, Jr. of the home; three sons, Darrell Johnson (Patty) of Hickory, Keith Johnson (Patsy) of Loveland, OH, Greg Johnson (Susan) of Henderson, and her six grandchildren; Jordan Bost (Nathan), Jay Johnson (Bridget), Taylor Johnson (Darcy), Tanner Johnson (Katie), Barrett Johnson (Kate), Anna Johnson, and four great-grandchildren; Caitlin Johnson, Hunter Johnson, River Johnson and Theo Bost; and her sisters, Betsy P. Gupton (Gene) and Louise Gibson of Henderson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Frances P. Twisdale; and two brothers, James Pegram and Robert Pegram. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends for light refreshments and fellowship. At other times, the family will be at the home. The family would also like to give a special thank you to the staff of Duke University Medical Center’s Neuro ICU unit, especially Dr. Katharine Colton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to North Henderson Baptist Church, General Fund, 1211 North Garnett Street, Henderson, NC 27536.
