HENDERSON-Stephen Goodyear Flannagan, 89, a resident of 822 S. Chestnut Street, died Sunday, January 15, 2017, at Maria Parham Medical Center.Born in Vance County on May 7, 1927, he was the son of the late Eric Goodyear Flannagan, Sr. and Beryl Morris Flannagan.
Steve graduated from Henderson High School in 1945 and North Carolina State in 1949.He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving during World War II, a member of the American Legion Post 60, the Kerr Lake Ensemble where he played the French Horn and was a former mmber of the Henderson Rotary Club of which he was a past president.He was a Mechanical Engineer with the Architectural Firm of Eric G. Flannagan and Sons, and. was a member of The Church of the Holy Innoncents.His main loves were God and family.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 1 pm at The Church of the Holy Innocents by the Rev. Donald A. Lowery and Dr. Ronald S. Cava.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Manly Flannagan of the home; one daughter, Celia F. Adams (Chip) of Huddleston, VA; two granddaughters, Robyn Adams of Farmville, VA and Kelly G. Hudgins (Andrew) of Raleigh; one grandson, Ben L. Gatewood of Chesapeake, VA; two sisters-in law, Rosalie Burnett of Greenville, SC andRose C. Flannagan of Henderson; and many nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Beth F. Gatewood; one brother, Eric G. Flannagan, Jr.; and one sister, Effie F. Baskerville.
The family will receive friends in the Great Hall at The Church of the Holy Innocents immediately following the service.
