HENDERSON- Stephen Samuel Hughes, Sr., 92, of Oxford Road, died Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Maria Parham Health. Born June 28, 1933 in Vance County, he was the son of the late Samuel S. Hughes and Mae S. Hughes. He retired from Roses Stores where he was a truck driver, he was a member of New Life Baptist Church and a Veteran of the United States Navy.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 30, 2025 at 2:00 P.M. at New Life Baptist Church by Rev. Joel Beckham.
Stephen is survived by his wife of 73 years, Edna Shearin Hughes of the home; two sons, Stephen Samuel Hughes, Jr. and wife, Gail, of Hurdle Mills, and Philip Todd Hughes and wife, Lisa of Myrtle Beach, SC; three grandchildren, Andrea H. Gardner and husband, Pete, Becky H. Abromaitis and Dillon Todd Hughes and fiancée Ki Vera; two great-grandchildren, Hayden Gardner and Skylar Abromaitis; a brother, Howard Hughes of Henderson and a sister-in-law, Pat Hughes of FL; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to Marvin and Janet Ross for the special care they provided to Mr. Hughes as well as the staff of Amedisys Hospice.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Johnson; and brother, Fred Hughes.
The family will receive friends following the service at New Life Baptist Church.
