CARY- Sterling Moore Jones died peacefully on Thursday, March 21, 2019. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert Poe (Bobby) Jones. Sterling is survived by her daughter Nancy Jones Winslow and husband Tom of Oak City NC, daughter Moli Jones of Durham NC, two grandchildren: Mary Sterling Winslow Grimes and husband John of Battleboro NC, Thomas Whichard Winslow of Raleigh NC and two great-grandchildren: John Carrington Grimes and Everett Reade Grimes and her special friend, Willard Harris.
Sterling was born in Warrenton, NC on February 11, 1929 to James Carr Moore and Lucy Palmer Moore. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her two sisters, Sarah Palmer Moore Haynes and Nancy Moore Mills, and a brother, James Carr Moore, Jr.
After graduating from Greensboro Woman’s College, Sterling enjoyed her career as a teacher and librarian with Vance County Schools. She was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church Henderson where she served on many church committees and as an Elder. She continued to treasure her life-long friendships in Henderson even after moving to Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary in 2007. While at Glenaire, she attended Cary Presbyterian where she felt spiritually loved and nourished.
Sterling was smart and witty and thoroughly enjoyed a joke and funny story. She loved to read, work the daily crossword puzzle and participate in many activities.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Henderson on Sunday, March 24, 2019, at 3 pm following a private burial. The family will receive and welcome friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
