Thomas Webb Miller, age 77, a resident of Henderson, died Saturday, August 27, 2011, at Maria Parham Medical Center.Born in Wilson County on October 20, 1933, he was the son of the late Robert Luther Miller, Sr. and Reba Webb Miller.He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force.Mr. Miller was the owner and operator of Webb Miller Fire Extinguisher Sales and Service, and was a member of West End Baptist Church, where he served as a church usher.
After serving in the United States Air force, Webb moved to Henderson in 1957 to manage his uncles business, Webbs Shoe Store. Four years later, he opened his own store, the Shoe Circus, which featured its own flying trapeze. The circus theme continued with him as he served as Town Clown in all the Henderson Parades.
After serving as a volunteer fireman, Webb later became a Training Officer for both the Henderson and Vance County Fire Departments. In recognition of his service, he was named Captain of the department. As evidence of his love for his work, Webb opened his own Fire Extinguisher Business. In total, he devoted over 50 years of his life to the fire service.
Webb was actively involved in his community, serving in the American Legion, the Elks Lodge, the Junior Chamber of Commerce, and the Vance County Rescue Squad.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 3:00 pm at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph McGowan.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Katherine Miller Eaton and husband Rick of Asheville, NC, Debra Lynn Miller Wittenberg and husband Michael of Winston-Salem, and Pamela Ann Miller Bartholomew and husband Brad of Henderson; one brother, Robert Luther Miller, Jr. of Kittrell; five grandchildren, Bill Eaton, Amy Eaton Suggs, Annie Wittenberg, John Wittenberg, and Miller Bartholomew; one great granddaughter, Sutton Suggs. And he is also survived by a special friend, Peggy Mason.
The family will receive friends Thursday immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of West End Baptist Church.
