Walter Benjamin Tharrington, age 88, a former resident of Henderson, died Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Britthaven Nursing Home of Chapel Hill. Born in Dewitt Va. on March 02, 1923, he was the son of the late Owen Keith Tharrington and Ruth Hoyle Tharrington.
Mr. Tharrington was a grading contractor, furnishing site work for various projects around Vance County.He was a veteran of the United States Army Air corps, serving during World War II as a radio operator and gunner on a B-24 Flying Fortress.He received the Air Medal and Citation for meritorious achievement for flying many missions over enemy-occupied continental Europe.Mr. Tharrington was a member of First Baptist Church of Henderson.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM at First Baptist Church by the Rev. Rusty Edwards.
Mr. Tharrington is survived by one son, W. Dennis Tharrington of Henderson, and two daughters, Grey T. Currin of Oxford and Ann T. Hoyle of Henderson, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.He is also survived by one sister, Francis Tharrington Alden of Charlotte, NC and two brothers, Jasper Earnhardt Tharrington of Henderson and Owen Keith Tharrington of Wilson, NC.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Grady Tharrington, and one sister, Doris T. Powers.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church parlor.At other times, they will be at the home of Dennis and Amine Tharrington at 430 Woodland Rd.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The Salvation Army, 355 Alexander Avenue, Henderson, NC 27536.
