DABNEY- William Donald Dorsey, 67, a lifelong resident of the Dabney community, died Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Duke Medical Center. He was the son of the late William Lloyd Dorsey and Virginia Hoyle Dorsey. Donnie was born February 28, 1955 in Henderson. He attended Dabney Elementary School, a community and a school that he cherished every day of his life. He graduated from Vance Senior High School, Class of 1973. Donnie attended Louisburg College and Vance Granville Community College. After thirty years of dedicated service he retired from the US Postal Service. He worked as a city carrier in Oxford for twelve years where he thoroughly enjoyed getting to know and care for the people who lived on his route. Later, he was appointed postmaster in Townsville, Macon, and Warrenton and served as interim postmaster in Franklinton, Norlina, Carrboro, and Henderson. Donnie’s love for people and service was apparent in his job performance. In 2000, he was recognized as the Postmaster of the Year for the Raleigh District, for distinguished performance and team spirit to the postal service. He was a man of many talents. If he could have earned awards for excellence in Do-It-Yourself projects a room would need to be added to his home to hold them all. He was fun with a keen sense of humor, and a sharp wit bringing his family and friends many hours of joy. Donnie sacrificed his time, comfort, and resources freely. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. A memorial service is planned at Harris Chapel United Methodist Church, 3870 Dabney Rd., Saturday, May 21st at 11 a.m. officiated by Rev Glen Stallsmith. He is survived by his wife, Joan Peoples Dorsey of the home, his son William Jordon Dorsey (Savannah) and grandson Colton Truman Smith of Sanford NC. He is also survived by his sister Kathy Dorsey Overton (Donnie) of Oxford and brother-in-law Jimmy Elliott of Henderson, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Teresa Dorsey Elliott. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at www2.jdrf.org.
