HENDERSON- William Hunter "Billy" Oakes, age 75, a resident of 2275 Ruin Creek Road, died Thursday, April 11, 2013 at a local nursing home.Born on February 13, 1938 in Vance County he was the son of the late William Belt Oakes and Beatrice Hall Oakes.He served in the North Carolina National Guard and was a Veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam.Mr. Oakes was the recipient of several awards including a Purple Heart. He was a lifelong member of Tabbs Creek Baptist Church..
Graveside funeral services with Military Honors will be held Sunday at 3:00 PM at Tabbs Creek Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Frank Sossamon.
He is survived by his daughter, Jan Elizabeth Oakes of Asheville; his son, Edward Hunter Oakes of Wilmington; their mother, Delores Walker Oakes of Chapel Hill; two sisters, Betty O.White and Lucy O. Mantas both of Henderson; and a brother, Alvin E. Oakes of Henderson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Julian B. Oakes.
The family will receive friends at the home of Lucy Mantas at 2515 Fairway Drive.
