Willie Joseph "Joe" Elam, 47, of Lexington, Kentucky, died Wednesday, July 14, in Henderson, NC. Born in Warren County on January 27, 1963, he was the youngest son of the late Irene Day Elam and Jimmy Elam.
Joe wasa professional Saddlebred horse trainer at the Blue Willow Farm at Rigbys Green of Versailles, Kentucky. He was a member of the American Saddlebred Horsemans Association, the United Professional Horsemans Association, and the U.S. Equestrian Federation. He was also a licensed official at Saddlebred competitions and served on the advisory board of the Kentucky Spring Premier Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky.
He is survived by one son, Alex Elam, ofVersailles, Kentucky; two sisters, Nettie White and brother-in-law, Chocky White, ofHenderson, NC; Beth Oakley and brother-in-law, Allen Oakley, of Raleigh NC; one brother Jim Elam and sister-in-law, Lou Ann Elam, ofWarrenton NC; four nieces, three nephews and one great-nephew.
The family also acknowledges Joes former wife, Kim Newell, and the extraordinary care and support given by Julie Kaufman, Ann Fitzpatrick, Dr. Jan Prows, and many other close friends.
The family will receive friends at the home ofNettie and Chocky White, 221 Beechwood Trail, Henderson, on Sunday, July 18, from 7:00 until 9:00 PM.A memorial celebration will also be held at Blue Willow Farm on August 8, in Versailles, Kentucky from 4 till 7pm.
