HENDERSON-Zella Winifred Shearin Knight, 93, a resident of 1442 Peace Street, diedTuesday, October 20, 2015, at Maria Parham Medical Center after a brief illness.Born in Warren County on October 24, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Mordecai and Lelia Harper Aycock Shearin of Littleton, NC.Zella graduated from Littleton High School in 1940 and attended Vance Granville Community College, earning certification as a teacher assistant, as well as completing many personal enrichment classes.Zella retired in 1999 after serving as a teacher assistant in the Vance County School system for almost 30 years.A long time member of West End Baptist Church, Zella was active in ministry and worship as long as her health allowed.She especially valued the friendship of the Loyalty Sunday School Class and Annie Faulkner Womens Missionary Union.An avid gardener, Zella shared her love of plants through the Master Gardener Program and the Agricultural Extension Service for many years.It was her pleasure to share her flowers and vegetables with family, friends, and neighbors.Zella had a lifelong love of learning and was always interested in meeting new people.The absence of her sweet disposition and witty sense of humor will leave a tremendous void.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11 am at West End Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph E. McGowan.Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
She is survived by her children, Adrian Knight of Orlanda, FL, Billy Knight and wife Sandy of Kingsport, TN, Marty Knight of Asheville, Charles Knight and wife, Amy of Orlando, FL, Cherry Ayscue of Henderson, Lelia Knight of Leicester, Mary Knight of Henderson, and Robert Knight of Henderson, as well as thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.Zella had a special relationship with Ric Cruz Seggara, and Jeff Tedder and loved them both as her own.Other surviving family members are her sister, Jean Bedwell and husband, David of Melbourne, FL; and a brother, John K. Shearin and wife, Helen of Ocala, FL.She was predeceased by her husband, Vester Leon Knight, a daughter-in-law, Betty Knight, and a son-in-law, William Robert Ayscue.
The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 am prior to the service at West End Baptist Church and at other times they will be at the home on Peace Street.
Zellas beloved grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers.
